Sonnet XI: I Write Sorrow

26 Dec

I write Sorrow, not that it supersedes,
nor withers tendrils upon my taking,
not of dalliance for such paltry needs,
but that ’tis shadow, needful of making;
in praise of Sorrow, I write every word,
not with tears shed long, nor of wounded heart,
but with the need for Sorrow to be heard,
that in my life, it has played well its part;
thus I write Sorrow, its beauty denied,
for ’twas by your presence that Joy was born,
and ’twas by your death that Joy too had died,
so I sing of woe, now left me to mourn;
as in the days of your sunlight, I breathed,
so in the nights of your darkness, I grieved.
